Advising

Teaching, Supporting, Connecting

Advisors are an integral part of your education. They’ll support you during your academic journey and help you make the most of your Mason experience.

Electrical and computer engineering students work closely with an advisor to plan schedules and meet all degree requirements.

Talk with your advisor prior to course registration each semester.

Advising

Undergraduate Student Advising

If you are an undeclared (or non-ECE student) who is considering a bachelors degree in electrical or computer engineering, you can make an appointment with Smriti Kansal Patwardhan, academic advisor and coordinator for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

You can also meet with the Volgenau School of Engineering advisor for undeclared students in room 2500 in the Nguyen Engineering Building. You can review criteria to declare here.

If you are a declared ECE undergraduate student, you will be assigned a faculty advisor and will receive your advisor’s name via email during your first semester at Mason. Your advisor's name is also displayed in our main office. Advising office hours can also be accessed here (this is the link to a Bb document where we will post advising hours each semester). Make sure to contact your advisor each semester for course planning and other academic/career planning related issues.

The ECE department holds an advising day each semester before registration for next semester begins. Please check back here for the dates for each semester.

If you are a declared electrical or computer engineering major and cannot determine who your advisor is, email our department.

For additional information about our undergraduate programs, adding a minor or second major, accelerated master’s programs, internships, co-ops, study abroad, and other questions, contact Smriti Kansal Patwardhan, academic advisor and coordinator for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Advising resources can also be found at ECE Undergraduate Student Resources and VSE Undergraduate Student Services.

Master’s Student Advising

If you are a master’s student in electrical or computer engineering, you will be informed of your faculty advisor’s name in your admissions letter. Your advisor's name is also displayed in our main office. Advising office hours can also be accessed here (this is the link to a Bb document where we will post advising hours each semester). Make sure to contact your advisor each semester to discuss your plan of study and other academic/career planning related issues.

If at any point you need information about who your advisor is or their office hours, email our department.

All incoming master’s students are advised to attend orientation prior to starting the program. Orientation covers important concepts such as choosing a concentration, creating a plan of study as well as the scholarly paper, research project or thesis options to complete the degree. Orientation slides may be found here.

Doctoral Student Advising

Upon admission to the program, each PhD student in electrical and computer engineering is assigned an ECE faculty member as an academic advisor. The academic advisor provides guidance to the student on coursework and preparing for the qualifying exam.  After the student passes the qualifying exam, the student proposes and the ECE department chair appoints a dissertation director who must be a Mason graduate faculty member with a full-time appointment. The dissertation director becomes the student’s academic advisor.

If you need additional information about doctoral advising email our department.

Smriti Kansal Patwardhan is an undergraduate academic advisor and coordinator for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
